簡介

Dire Straits是一支英國搖滾樂隊，於1976 年組建於倫敦西南部的代特福德，活躍於1977 至1995年期間。他們的成功主要應歸於吉他演奏大師、樂隊的核心人物 Mark Knopfler（生於1949 年8 月12 日）。Knopfler 29 歲時才開始音樂生涯，此前他曾做過新聞記者和教師。他吸收了許多音樂，在組建樂隊之時，在歌曲創作和吉他演奏上已臻成熟。Knopfler 與他的兄弟 David（吉他手）和 John Illsley（貝司手）聯合以後，鼓手 Pick Withers 又加入到樂隊中，他們開始在倫敦的酒吧中舉辦一些小型演出。最後他們花了 120 英鎊錄製了一盤樣帶，其中包括後來成為經典的歌曲“Sultans Of Swing”，這首歌在倫敦電台節目中播放後，各唱片公司蜂擁而至競相與該樂隊簽約。

經歷

1978 年他們與 Phonogram 公司簽約，錄製了單曲“Sultans Of Swing”和一張同名唱片《Dire Straits》，此後 Dire Straits 很快就成為了一支成就巨大的搖滾樂隊。1979 年出版的專輯《Communique》暢銷世界。這張唱片發行以後，David 離開樂隊開始個人發展。1980年第 3 張專輯《Making Movies》，來自 Bruce Springsteen 樂隊的 Roy Bittan 參加錄製。該專輯獲得了金唱片，其中的《Romeo And Juliet》和《Skateaway》成為電台和 MTV 中的熱門歌曲。 1980 年的巡迴演出中，吉他手 Hal Lindes 和鍵盤手 Alan Clark 也加入到該樂隊中。與此同時，Knopfler 作為一位吉他演奏家所享有的聲譽繼續增長，他暫時離開樂隊與 Bob Dylan 和 Steely Dan 進行一些合作。1982 年出版了第 4 張專輯《Love Over Gold》，這張唱片由 Knopfler 自己製作。專輯中的長篇作品充滿了實驗色彩，單曲“Private Investigations”獲得英國排行榜的第 2 名，專輯也成為英國榜上的冠軍專輯，而且在美國成為金唱片。 1982 年，Knopfler 開始在 Dire Straits 之外探索新的音樂途徑，為電影配樂並出現在Van Morrison 的專輯中。Dire Straits 在 1983、1984 兩年間的大部分時間處於偃旗息鼓狀態，這期間，Knopfler 為 Bob Dylan 製作了專輯《Infidel》，為 Tiner Turner 的復出專輯創作了一首“Private Dancer”，給 Aztec Camers 製作唱片《Knife》。1984 年春，Dire Straits 樂隊出版了現場演出錄製的唱片《Alchemy》。這年底，樂隊進入錄音棚錄製他們的第 5 張專輯，並增加了一位新的成員，鍵盤手 Guy Fletcher。專輯《Brothers in Arms》於 1985 年夏天正式出版，它是樂隊的一張突破性的專輯，具有諷刺意味的是，其中一首嘲弄音樂電視的單曲“Money For Nothing”竟然在 MTV 電視台的推波助瀾下成了熱門歌曲，在美國排行榜前 10 名傍留了 9 個星期並賣掉了 900 萬張；在英國，這張專輯也是 80 年代銷量最高的專輯。“Walk Of Life”和“So Far Away”使這張專輯在排行榜上一直停留到 1986 年。為推廣這張專輯，樂隊舉行了近兩百場的演出。隨後，Knopfler 為 Randy Newman 和 Joan Armatrading 製作專輯，參加了 Eric Clapton 的巡迴演出，又與 Chet Atkins 合作了一張專輯《Neck And Neck》。 1989 年，他組建了鄉村搖滾樂隊 Motting Hillbillies，並於次年出版了專輯《Missing… Presumed Having a Good Time》。在經過了一系列個人活動之後，Knopfler 於 1990 年重新組隊 Dire Straits。1991 年秋，新專輯《On Every Street》出版，不過這張專輯並不像人們預期的那樣，在美國只成為白金唱片，連排行榜前 40 名都沒有進去，甚至沒有一首熱門歌曲。同樣，他們的巡迴演出也是失望而歸，他們在歐洲和美國巡迴演出的門票有時根本賣不出去。這次巡演之後，出版了現場專輯《On The Night》，隨後樂隊又無限期放了長假。 Knopfler 在 1996 年出版了他的個人專輯《Golden Heart》，但並沒有獲得太多的喝彩。也許，Dire Straits 及 Knopfler 出色的才華隨著 80 年代的逝去而一去不復返了。從商業角度來看，Dire Straits 特別是 Knopfler 證明他們是自 70 年代以來最成功的搖滾組合之一，在全世界銷售了近 2000 萬張唱片。

音樂風格

Dire Straits的音樂風格受很多音樂風格的影響，包括 爵士，鄉村音樂及藍調，比較接近於搖滾這個大範疇內的beat music（節奏音樂）。 樂隊的音樂極簡化，與樂隊成立時期是大熱門的朋克搖滾相去甚遠。他們的音樂是復古酒吧搖滾的產物，然而當時酒吧搖滾是積極向上，讚揚美好時期，樂隊的音樂卻是悲傷的。 儘管是這種奇怪的搖滾風格，Dire Straits 卻成為世界上最成功的商業搖滾樂隊之一。
