成功
樂隊的許多成員在後朋克時期繁忙的曼城搖滾樂壇上非常活躍。Mick Hucknall 曾是車庫樂隊 The Frantic Elevators 的靈魂人物，而貝司手 Tony Bowers、鼓手 Chris Joyce 和銅管樂手 Tim Kellett 都來自 The Durutti Column 樂隊。後來鍵盤手 Fritz McIntyre 和吉他手 Sylvan Richardson 也加入了樂隊。共同演出了一陣子後，樂隊加入了 Elektra 公司。樂隊後來由於參加了 James Brown 1985 年的英國巡迴演出，並在演出中獲得了很大成功，因而聲名大振。同年夏天，Simply Red 以一首翻唱 RB 組合 Valentine Brothers 的1982年歌曲 Moneys Too Tight (To Mention) 打入英國排行榜前 20 名。隨後樂隊推出了他們的首張專輯《Picture Book》。隨著專輯成為白金唱片，樂隊在全歐洲的名氣與日俱增，最終他們以一曲 Holding Back the Years 在英美兩國都獲得了極大的成功，在美國成為冠軍曲，英國榜第 2 名。樂隊的第2張專輯 - 1987年的《Men Women》成功發行，確立了 Mick Hucknall 世界一流歌手的地位，同年，吉他手 Sylvan Richardson離開了樂隊，他的位置由 Aziz Ibrahim 取代，後來在1989年的《A New Flame》專輯中，Aziz Ibrahim 被 Heitor T.P. 取代。1989年的專輯《A New Flame》直達英國榜冠軍，並在美國產生了他們第 2 首冠軍單曲 - 翻唱 Harold Melvin The Bluenotes 樂隊的 If You Dont Know Me By Now 。到了1991年9月 Simply Red 推出第四張專輯《Star》的時候，貝司手 Tony Bowers 和鼓手 Chris Joyce 都已離開樂隊，Shaun Ward（bass）和Gota（drums）加入樂隊，新的薩克斯管吹奏者 Ian Kirkham 則成為 Simply Red 的永久成員。《Stars》成為 Simply Red 最出色，同時也是最成功的專輯，專輯中產生了所首熱門歌曲 - Star , Something Got Me Started , Wonderland , Thrill Me , For Your Babies 等，此專輯獲得了英國最佳專輯獎，成為英國1991年銷量最高的唱片，並在全世界銷售出了850萬張。1995年10月，Simply Red 的新專輯《Life》推出，這時候Simply Red 的陣容是：Mick Hucknall , Fritz McIntyre , Heitor T.P. , Ian Kirkham 和伴唱 Dee Johnson。該專輯在英國比在美國成功，它幾乎在歐洲所有的國家的排行榜上名列前茅，包括其中的單曲 Fairground 。Mick Hucknall 在《Life》專輯中加入了一些潮流化的東西，比如 Hip - Hop 節奏等，但評論對 Simply Red 的這次的轉型並不叫好。在總體水平上《Life》不如《Stars》出色。1996年，Simply Red推出第1張精選專輯《Greatest Hits》。此後 Simply Red 似乎成了Mick Hucknall 的單人樂隊了。1998年，Simply Red 推出專輯《Blue》，與前幾張偏於流行的專輯相比，《Blue》是 Mick Hucknall 對樂隊早期風格的一次回歸，是對那些真正影響過他的黑人音樂的一次致敬。1999年，Simply Red 推出專輯《Love And Russian Winter》，不知道為什麼 Mick Hucknall 為專輯取了個那么革命的名字，專輯裡面的圖片也是紅五星、戰士、工人什麼。其實《Love And Russian Winter》依然是一張帶著 Simply Red 特色的白人靈歌專輯， Mick Hucknall 放棄了與流行潮流調情的雜念，一心一意做他真正擅長的音樂。只是在潮流大變更下《Blue》和《Love And Russian Winter》都沒有取得像《Stars》或《A New Flame》這樣的佳績。2001年，Simply Red 再次推出一張精選專輯《Its Only Love》。
